Volunteering at State Records

Volunteers at State Records work on a range of projects designed to improve access to our collection and aid the preservation of records for the future. Work undertaken by volunteers is a valuable supplement to State Records business.

Projects are largely based at our Gepps Cross Research Centre, where volunteers can work closely with official records. We also have some opportunities for projects involving digitised records that can be undertaken offsite.

What kinds of projects do volunteers undertake?

State Records offers the following types of volunteer projects:

  • Indexing

  • Transcription

  • Digitisation

  • Research

  • Rehousing records

Who can volunteer?

Anyone with the time to give can apply for a volunteer position with State Records. Good attention to detail is required for many projects, and experience with Microsoft programs (Word and Excel) is desirable. We also give volunteers specific training and support for each project. Individuals with an interest in history or archives will find the work particularly rewarding.

We do require volunteers to have a satisfactory National current Police Check before they begin volunteering with us. Volunteers are eligible for a reduced fee. For further information about South Australia Police Checks, please see the SAPOL website.

How many hours are volunteers expected to contribute?

We ask volunteers to be available for a minimum of four hours a week, generally between the hours of 9.30 to 4.30 Tuesday to Friday while our Research Centre is open to the public. The day(s) of the week on which you volunteer may need to be negotiated depending on whether we have the equipment to accommodate multiple volunteers coming in on the same day.
