--- Classroom Training and COVID-19 ---

Due to the continual evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic, our Training for Accredited and Non-Accredited FOI Officers has been postponed to a later date. It is not possible to determine a future date at this time.

In the interim, as all agencies automatically have at least one Accredited Officer, their Principal Officer / Chief Executive, the making of FOI determinations should be able to continue and not be impacted by any delay in the delivery of training.

However, if your agency has an urgent need for an officer to undertake training so they can be designated as an Accredited Officer for your agency, please let us know via email at Staterecords@sa.gov.au.  An urgent need might arise where the previous Accredited Officer is leaving the agency or going on extended leave; or if the agency is experiencing a significant increase in applications.

This decision is being made to support the public effort to minimise the risk to the health, safety and welfare of the community of South Australia.

FOI training delivered by State Records is only available to State and Local Government staff, as well as staff from the three public Universities in South Australia.

Our FOI training courses are not open to the public.

Training for Accredited and Non Accredited FOI Officers

The Training for Accredited and Non Accredited FOI Officers course is a mandatory requirement for staff who need to be designated as an accredited FOI officer under the Freedom of Information Act 1991. It is also suitable for other FOI officers who require training.

Training for Accredited and Non Accredited FOI Officers is delivered in a classroom by State Records.

The purpose of this course is to provide the participant with the knowledge and skills to allow them to be designated by their principal officer as an accredited FOI officer - provided they meet the definition of an accredited FOI officer in section 4 of the Freedom of Information Act 1991

Accredited FOI officers are responsible for dealing with FOI applications and making determinations.  Other staff from State Government, Local Government and Universities who need to undertake training to support their accredited FOI officer can also attend this course.

This is a comprehensive training course that is made up of four modules delivered over 2.5 days.

  • Module 1 – provides an introduction to the FOI Act
  • Module 2 - examines the administration and processing of FOI applications
  • Module 3 - examines the types of documents that may be exempt from disclosure and the relevant exemption clauses that might apply
