The Self-Assessment Tool (Tool) enables you to assess your agency’s:
- Information Governance Program’s Maturity and
- Compliance with the Information Management Standard (Standard).
The Tool offers a scalable, tiered approach to help identify areas of strength and weakness at each level of maturity and capability. It will help to develop and implement actions to address weaknesses, improve outcomes and progress to the next level.
Continued process improvements is based on small steps rather than major innovations that might not be possible. The Tool includes four maturity and capability levels, with indicators of achievement for each.
Absent (level 0) | Agency is either unaware or has taken no steps to address this behaviour. |
---|---|
Basic (level 1) | Agency has awareness of this behaviour, but there is little practical evidence of action. Planning has commenced. |
Operational (level 2) | Agency is actively addressing this behaviour. There will be evidence of a planned approach, even if it is not fully implemented in some areas. The initiative are operating at a reasonable standard. |
Proactive (level 3) | Agency has a dedicated commitment to achieving this behaviour through innovation and/or learning based on ongoing monitoring and review. |
To comply with the Standard, your agency must satisfy the level 2 (operational) criteria for each behaviour, unless a valid reason can be demonstrated why maintaining a lower level is acceptable, e.g. due to agency operational or regulatory requirements or level of risk identified.
The Tool is an excel spreadsheet which comprises four components:
- Instructions for use
- Detailed Assessment
- Capability Model
- Assessment Priorities.
Refer to the instructions within the Tool for more information on its use.
Information Management Maturity Survey
In addition to using the Tool at any time to assess your agency's current information governance maturity and capability level, your agency will also be requested to complete the Tool and report your rating to State Records under section 15 of the State Records Act 1997.
State Records recently surveyed agencies in 2023. The reports from this survey can be accessed at Information Management Maturity Survey.
