The Surveying of Palmerston 1869 - 70

Map of Palmerston and Port Darwin SRSA GRS 6910
Map of Palmerston and Port Darwin SRSA GRS 6910

Goyder reached Darwin Harbour early in 1869, and within a few months had fixed the site of the Territory's capital at Palmerston (afterwards Darwin). He also surveyed about 700,000 acres for farming land.

The general plan above is the 'public map' that would have been displayed at the Lands Department offices. From this, prospective buyers or leaseholders could make their selection of a section. The sections coloured green are those that have been selected.
