The Beginning

This map is a reproduction of and extract from Norman B. Tindale 1974 map of Indigenous groups' boundaries showing the geographic location of Aboriginal cultural groups in the Riverland region at the time of first European settlement in Australia.

It is not intended to represent contemporary relationships to land.

Further details of the work performed by Norman Tindale may be found by referring to the South Australian Museum

This was prior to the Chaffey Brothers and State Government initiative to irrigate the Riverland region. These leases represented one of the first permanent European settlements in South Australia's Riverland.

The Chaffey Brothers Irrigation Works Act of 1887 between William and George Chaffey and the Commissioner for Crown Lands.

This Act allowed for the agricultural development of the Riverland, changing the shape of the region forever.
