Manifest of Shipping departing from Port Adelaide 1840 - 1844
Manifests are lists documenting the cargo on a ship, the passengers and the crew members.
The manifest book in this series records data for outward shipping from Port Adelaide for the period 25 November 1840 to 21 May 1844. The series also contains an index to the manifest book created at a much later date.
Information recorded in the manifest book includes: name of ship, tonnage, name of master, intended destination, date, number, exporter, marks and numbers (presumably on the cargo, not the ship), quantity and description of cargo, and the cargo's value, crew members' names and roles (e.g. Chief Mate, Carpenter, Steward, Cook, Seaman, Apprentice, etc.) and passengers' names.
The Special List to the manifest book is arranged into two separate sequences. One is arranged alphabetically by the surname of the passenger and also records the name of the ship on which they were travelling, their intended destination, the date and page reference number. The second is arranged alphabetically by the surname of the crew member and also records their position in the crew, the ship on which they were travelling, their destination, the date and a page reference number.
