What is ArchivesSearch?
ArchivesSearch is the online collection catalogue of official State and Local Government records held by State Records of South Australia. You can use ArchivesSearch to: - search the titles and descriptions of agencies and records in the collection
- register and obtain a User ID
- order records for viewing at one of our Research Centres.
Please note: There are no digital images of records available online.

How do I access ArchivesSearch?
If you have access to the Internet, you can enter and explore our online collection catalogue, ArchivesSearch, from the State Records' website. There are two ways you can access ArchivesSearch: - from the Access Collection Catalogue in the blue banner at the top of this page, or
- from the Related Information link below.
Both options will take you directly to the introductory page of ArchivesSearch.

How do I use it to find the records I want?
The searching menu on the left of the ArchivesSearch screen offers different search options: - Keyword Search
- Direct Search
- Search in a Series
- Name Search
- World War I (WW1) Photos
- Passenger List Search.
The How to Search page, available from the searching menu, will explain how to use the different search options. Keyword Search is the best option if you are new to ArchivesSearch or archives in general. If you are familiar with archives and already have a reference ID for an agency or a record series use Direct Search.

When do I need to register?
You do not need to register to search the catalogue. When you first enter ArchivesSearch you are automatically logged in as a Guest User. If you wish to order records for viewing at a Research Centre, you will need to register. Once you are registered, you will be given a User ID. Use the User ID and the password you chose when registering to log-in and order records for viewing at a Research Centre.

If you have forgotten or lost your User ID or password, please contact Research Enquiries. Help screens are available to assist you to register and to search for and order records. If you don't know where to begin your search, browsing our subject-based research guides and finding aids may be useful. These guides might help identify specific references to records or give you useful terms for keyword searching. The guides and finding aids are available at both Research Centres.
